Gabon is actively engaged in crucial negotiations and technical preparations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aiming to establish a renewed framework for economic cooperation. The nation consistently maintains open communication with its long-standing financial partner. Officials confirm that discussions between the Gabonese government and the IMF are progressing steadily, characterized by a productive and responsible atmosphere.
Since the conclusion of the spring meetings last April, Gabonese representatives and IMF teams have been conducting regular exchanges via videoconference. These sessions adhere to a mutually agreed schedule, primarily dedicated to technical work. A significant meeting occurred on July 2, 2026, in Washington, DC, at the IMF headquarters. Thierry Minko, Gabon’s Minister of Economy, Finance, Debt, and Participations, who also oversees efforts against the high cost of living, held a cordial discussion with the IMF’s Africa Director and their associates, including Aliona Cebotari, the Mission Chief for Gabon.
The government highlighted that these ongoing discussions are guided by a jointly established, coherent roadmap. This strategic plan centers on several key areas: the revised finance law for 2026, the comprehensive macroeconomic and budgetary framework for the 2027-2029 period, the systematic consolidation of economic, financial, and budgetary data, and the meticulous preparation for subsequent phases of engagement with the Fund.
