In a significant diplomatic milestone, Gabon was elected this Tuesday, June 2, 2026, to serve as a vice-president for the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly. This appointment places Gabon within the executive bureau of the global body’s primary deliberative organ, marking its first return to this leadership level in nearly ten years.

A strategic return to international leadership

Alongside five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Égypte, Guinée-Bissau, Érythrée, and Zimbabwe—Gabon will begin its one-year term this September 2026. The mandate officially commences with the high-level opening of the 81st session of the UNGA.

Representing the African regional bloc, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will now play a central role in steering the international legislative calendar. This work will be conducted in close partnership with the President-elect, Khalilur Rahman.

Key responsibilities and global priorities

Throughout this 81st session, Gabon is set to take on vital diplomatic and managerial responsibilities. These duties include chairing various high-level and ordinary plenary meetings. Furthermore, the nation will hold a seat on the influential General Committee, which is responsible for organizing the assembly’s agenda, scheduling votes on global resolutions, and overseeing institutional priorities.

Beyond administrative tasks, Gabon will collaborate with fellow member states to champion the African Group’s core objectives. Key focus areas include accelerating sustainable development, driving climate action, and advancing necessary administrative reforms within the United Nations structure. This diplomatic advancement reflects the strategic international vision championed by the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
