French diplomatic staff exit Burkina Faso as bilateral ties sever

The departure of French diplomatic staff from Burkina Faso, alongside the reciprocal recall of Burkinabè diplomats from France, marks a significant development that aligns with the strategic direction set by Ouagadougou. This diplomatic shift follows the June 26 declaration by the regime under Captain Ibrahim Traoré, which unilaterally announced the cessation of diplomatic ties with France.

Ouagadougou’s decision was accompanied by accusations against Paris of engaging in “incessant activism” detrimental to Burkinabè interests and providing support to “subversive networks.” In response to this announcement, the Burkinabè chargé d’affaires in Paris was summoned, where the French Foreign Ministry, in a move emphasizing reciprocity, informed them that Burkinabè diplomatic personnel were also expected to depart France within a seven-day period, concluding this past Monday evening.

Burkinabè authorities have leveled accusations against France, alleging its support for terrorist groups. Paris has vehemently denied these claims, characterizing them as “completely false.” The French Foreign Ministry underscored its firm condemnation of all terrorist attacks and reiterated its unwavering support for the populations who bear the brunt of the ongoing crisis.

This definitive break in relations comes on the heels of several prior escalations, including the withdrawal of French military forces from Burkina Faso, the recall of France’s ambassador from Ouagadougou, and the Burkinabè government’s increasing alignment with new international partners, notably Russia.
