Fraudulent practices in student visa applications are prompting French authorities in Yaoundé to tighten their screening process. Officials report a surge in irregularities, including forged documents and misleading financial proofs, within Cameroonian applications for private school admissions in France.

Escalating fraud detection measures

Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Counselor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French Embassy in Yaoundé, highlights the growing sophistication of fraud attempts. « False attestations, tampered transcripts, incorrect identity papers, or falsified financial guarantees are becoming alarmingly common,» she explains. « We’re now seeing patterns that require a dedicated team to meticulously verify every document submitted.»

To counter these irregularities, French consular services have implemented stricter financial requirements for Cameroonian students seeking visas to attend private institutions in France. Applicants must now provide proof of full tuition payment or equivalent funds before visa approval.

Addressing concerns over partial payments

For students who had already made partial payments in France,Ms. Piquet-Viaux clarifies that solutions vary by institution. « If funds are held in a blocked account, they remain inaccessible until visa issuance and student acceptance,» she notes. « The goal is to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of financial guarantees.»

Cameroon is the only African country currently subject to these enhanced visa measures, a decision that has sparked widespread criticism among affected families.
