Félix Tshisekedi warns Congolese diaspora about divisions during Houston address
The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, delivered a stirring message to Congolese living in the United States during a gathering in Houston. The event followed the historic 1-1 draw between the DRC’s national football team and Portugal in the FIFA World Cup.
Unity and vigilance against division
Addressing the Congolese community in Texas, President Tshisekedi emphasized the critical importance of national unity and vigilance against internal divisions. He cautioned against the manipulation of regionalism and called on compatriots to reject betrayal of their country.
« Their accomplices have gone mad. Stay united. Do not let them deceive you or use regionalism to control you. Refuse to betray your nation. There are still witches at work — we thought they were only in Rwanda, but they have infiltrated us here, » he declared, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the eastern regions of the DRC.
A historic moment on the world stage
The DRC’s national football team, affectionately known as the Léopards, earned their first-ever point in FIFA World Cup history with the draw against Portugal. President Tshisekedi celebrated the team’s performance, which he said brought immense pride to the nation.
« The Léopards have made us proud. I asked FIFA if we advance from the group stage, they will add more tickets for Congolese here. Do not worry. We will provide resources to our ambassador, » he stated, reflecting on the team’s impact beyond the football pitch.
He also reminded the audience of the resilience required in the face of adversity, particularly in a country facing ongoing conflict.
« Today, everyone who feared Cristiano Ronaldo saw how we played — a nation at war like ours. Let us stand tall as our national anthem commands. Show the dignity of being Congolese, » he urged.
Looking ahead: hope for the future
President Tshisekedi expressed confidence in an upcoming improvement in the security situation in the eastern DRC. He reaffirmed his belief that the region would soon be liberated from armed groups and called for national reconciliation.
« I have faith that in the coming days, all of the Congo will be liberated. Our brothers and sisters are celebrating in Goma and Bukavu — we will be together. The enemies infiltrated us, but now we have learned and will build something greater, » he said.
The president also discussed his imminent return to the DRC, where he intends to focus on advancing national development across multiple sectors, including sports, science, and education.
« We started with the Léopards, and we will extend this to all areas: football, basketball, science, and education. Be proud to be Congolese. It is my mission to restore this pride, » he concluded.
The address in Houston marked a significant moment of connection between the Congolese head of state and the diaspora, blending themes of national pride, unity, and hope for the future.
