Progress has been slow for health initiatives in Mali. Although the national objective was to immunize 70% of the target population aged 12 and above, the current vaccination coverage has not yet reached 8%. In response to this situation, a United Nations delegation traveled to the country in early October to provide strategic support for the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (PNDV).
“Several campaigns are currently in motion. We are here to coordinate with the government and its various partners to bolster ongoing efforts and ensure the population is protected against Covid-19,” stated Ted Chaiban, the lead UN coordinator for global Covid-19 vaccine readiness.

The difficulty of gaining public trust
During the mission in Bamako, the UN representative commended the Mali Red Cross for establishing an extensive organizational system to manage the pandemic. This network brings together diverse groups to train volunteers and educate the public, while also supplying essential protective equipment. These actions come at a time when the severity of the virus has notably decreased across West Africa.
However, changing the minds of skeptical citizens remains a complex undertaking. Many people in Mali continue to show resistance toward the injections, especially as the perceived threat of Covid-19 continues to diminish.
