Local residents captured footage of two Cameroonian gendarmes armed with assault rifles moving through the village of Gasol, situated within Central African Republic territory.

The soldiers stood accused of extortion after the videos circulated widely online. Responding to public reports, Central African Republic troops stationed in the area intervened promptly, halting the unauthorized advance.

The incident escalated when Central African Republic military personnel determined the foreign presence constituted a violation of national sovereignty. The gendarmes were disarmed, then escorted to the Beloko police station near the Cameroon border.

High-level discussions restore calm

A high-level meeting convened on Tuesday to address the border dispute. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to mutual respect and territorial integrity. The weapons seized were returned to Cameroonian authorities, while a joint monitoring committee was established to oversee the resolution process.

Tensions have simmered for decades, with Central African Republic residents alleging illegal occupation of border zones by Cameroon—a claim Yaoundé continues to deny.
