Canada opens historic embassy in Cotonou to boost Bénin ties

Nearly six and a half decades after establishing diplomatic relations with Bénin, Canada has inaugurated its first full-fledged embassy in Cotonou. The ceremonial launch on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 was led by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honorable Anita Anand, during her working visit to Bénin, alongside her Béninese counterpart, Corinne Amori Brunet, alongside diplomatic envoys and key officials including Hugues Oscar Lokossou, delegate minister to the Ministry of Economy and Finance responsible for external resource mobilization and debt management.
This landmark initiative underscores the strong friendship between the two nations and their shared commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation. The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in Cotonou will enhance political dialogue, streamline the monitoring of commitments, and strengthen collaboration across critical sectors.
« Canada is fully committed to working with Bénin, and today’s milestone injects fresh momentum into this partnership, » declared the Honorable Anita Anand. Her Béninese counterpart echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the embassy’s opening symbolizes a deeper and more dynamic relationship. « Our cooperation is expanding, diversifying, and investing more in economics, innovation, security, and human development—values that resonate deeply in both Bénin and Canada, » stated the Béninese foreign minister.
Earlier that same morning, the two foreign ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political and diplomatic consultations. The agreement establishes a permanent framework for ongoing dialogue, ensuring consistent follow-up on bilateral commitments and enhanced coordination on regional and global issues.
A broader working session followed, bringing together Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade with responsibility for Industry and Private Investment Promotion; Gildas Agonkan, delegate minister to the President responsible for National Defense; and Hugues Oscar Lokossou, as previously noted.
