In Bamako, the capital of Mali, a tragic incident unfolded at dawn when two young men were fatally shot by military personnel near the headquarters of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM). The shooting occurred around 5:30 a.m. near a highly secured area that also hosts a prominent hotel in the city.

According to military authorities, the two individuals, riding a motorcycle, allegedly attempted to breach security checkpoints surrounding the ORTM building. However, conflicting accounts suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to their construction site.

Residents of Bamako are growing increasingly accustomed to the frequent security barriers in the city, yet reactions to this incident have been divided. Some argue the military’s response was justified, while others question whether alternative measures could have been taken to avoid a fatal outcome.

security measures tightened after the incident

The checkpoints near the ORTM were established in late April following intensified clashes between the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and militants from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). The group had launched simultaneous attacks across seven locations, including Bamako, prompting heightened security protocols.

The military stated that the two men ignored warning shots after forcing their way through the first checkpoint. Only after repeated attempts to halt their progress did soldiers open fire, resulting in their deaths. One local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, emphasized the risks of ignoring security protocols in such a volatile environment. « Everyone knows that during this period of uncertainty, no one should enter this zone without authorization. The roads are closed, and alerts require immediate compliance. The soldiers acted within their rights. »

questions linger over the circumstances

Not everyone shares this perspective. Seyba, a resident of Bamako, believes the military could have taken different actions to apprehend the individuals alive. « Why not aim for the motorcycle or injure them to stop their escape? Now that they’re dead, we’ll never know the truth. Even if they were suspected militants, this incident raises serious questions. »

Witnesses on the scene reported that the two men were seasonal workers en route to their job site, possibly unaware of the strict security measures in place. In response to the shooting, authorities have since reinforced security around the ORTM, military camps in Bamako, and the Senou International Airport, restricting access to authorized personnel only.
