In a series of coordinated strikes on Saturday, July 4, Burkina Faso endured one of its deadliest days in recent months. Jihadist militants—affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-linked group—launched a wave of attacks across multiple regions, leaving at least fifty soldiers and civilian defense volunteers dead. The assaults targeted key military positions, civilian assets, and strategic locations in the north, northwest, and southwest of the country.

The offensive began just before 5:00 a.m. when fighters stormed the Di military camp in the Sourou Province, in the northwest. After intense firefights, the militants breached the base before retreating with captured weapons and ammunition. According to local reports, at least 23 soldiers and 11 civilian volunteers lost their lives in the assault. Video evidence released by the group claimed to show 22 enemy combatants killed, a figure not independently verified at this time.

The same day, the militants launched further attacks in the southwest and central-west. In Dalan and Tiéré, at least eighteen soldiers were killed, while extensive material damage was reported. The group also targeted Thiou and Séguénéga in the north, where no fatalities occurred—but civilian vehicles were set ablaze, according to eyewitness accounts.
Despite the scale and coordination of the attacks, no official response has yet been issued by Burkina Faso’s military leadership or government. Meanwhile, JNIM has proudly claimed responsibility for the assaults, with footage of the raids circulating widely on social media platforms.
