The Republican Police delivered a significant blow to urban criminal networks this week in Cotonou, executing a large-scale operation within the Vodjè district.

This targeted intervention successfully dismantled a well-known ghetto, which had served as a discreet hub for Indian hemp trafficking. Initial investigative findings indicate that the location functioned both as a strategic transit point and a consumption site for users.
The raid resulted in the apprehension of several individuals at the scene and the seizure of substantial equipment directly associated with the illicit trade. Investigations are vigorously ongoing to identify and apprehend all branches and individuals involved in this criminal enterprise.
Military involvement suspected in drug ring?
However, the case has taken a particularly serious turn with the Republican Police actively searching for a Béninese armed forces officer. Known by the alias « Alòtrò » (a local term for gecko), this military personnel is the primary focus of investigators, who suspect him of direct complicity with the trafficking networks.
According to intelligence gathered by security services, the soldier did not frequent the ghetto for personal consumption. Instead, he had allegedly established a sophisticated racketeering scheme, regularly collecting payments from the dealers.
In exchange for these illicit commissions, the military officer reportedly offered them supposed protection, shielding them from potential law enforcement raids and thereby betraying his sworn duty.
