The Republic of China has delivered a substantial humanitarian aid package to Chad, consisting of 1,770 metric tons of rice. This donation underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations in addressing food insecurity amid climate and economic challenges.

The aid was officially received at the Radisson Blu hotel in the capital, presided over by Chad’s Minister of Social Action, Zara Mahamat Issa. Speaking at the event, she emphasized that this contribution extends beyond mere material support, symbolizing the deep friendship and collaborative spirit binding both countries.
Highlighting the critical role of this assistance, she cited a Chinese proverb: “In times of hardship, a single grain of rice is worth an ounce of gold.” The donation will directly benefit vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and households struggling with food shortages.
Government and ONASA commit to transparent distribution
Ahmat Mahamat Kosseï, Director-General of Chad’s National Food Security Office (ONASA), expressed profound gratitude for the timely support. He noted that this aid aligns with the government’s broader strategy under President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to combat food insecurity.
ONASA has pledged to ensure the rice is distributed efficiently and fairly to those most in need. This marks the latest in a series of similar donations from China, which has previously supplied Chad with 5,000 tons in 2014 and 2017, 5,966 tons in 2019, and smaller quantities of wheat and rice in 2022 and 2025.
China’s ambassador highlights long-term agricultural cooperation
Wang Xining, China’s Ambassador to Chad, addressed the gathering, acknowledging the severe strain on Chad’s food security due to regional conflicts and extreme weather patterns. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing annual cereal donations totaling nearly 2 billion CFA francs.
Beyond immediate food aid, he stressed China’s investment in sustainable solutions. “Giving a fish feeds for a day, but teaching to fish ensures lasting change,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of agricultural training and high-yield crop testing. Chinese technical missions are actively working with local farmers to enhance productivity and resilience.
Ambassador Wang also praised Chad’s agricultural potential, citing abundant water resources, fertile land, ample sunlight, and a diligent workforce. He pointed to the recent alignment of both countries’ development plans as a pivotal moment, noting China’s decision to waive tariffs for African nations with diplomatic ties to Beijing.
The ceremony concluded with a tour of the Chagoua FDAR warehouse in N’Djamena’s 7th arrondissement.
