Chad and Russia strengthen military and diplomatic cooperation
Chad and Russia have deepened their military and diplomatic ties to bolster regional security, including a new visa exemption agreement for diplomats and Chad’s participation in the Russia-Africa Summit.
On 14 July, Chad’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow to discuss enhanced defense cooperation. The talks centered on strengthening security across the Sahel-Sahara belt, where Chad plays a pivotal role. The two nations formalized a landmark agreement: diplomats from both countries will now enjoy visa-free travel, a move set to streamline bilateral engagement.
During the joint press conference, Lavrov addressed global tensions, including Russia’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine, while underscoring the shared commitment between Russia and African nations to combat terrorism. He highlighted the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in October, where President Mahamat Idriss Déby of Chad will be in attendance, reaffirming N’Djamena’s active role in this partnership.
Chad’s Foreign Minister praised Russia’s contributions to stabilizing the Sahel, expressing confidence that joint counterterrorism efforts with Sahelian allies will yield tangible progress in the region’s fight against extremism.
