The government of Tchad has categorically dismissed allegations from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights concerning civilian casualties during military operations in the Lake Chad region. These strikes were aimed at neutralising Boko Haram insurgents.
Speaking in N’Djamena, the Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, Gassim Chérif Mahamat, described the accusations as a calculated effort to tarnish the reputation of the national forces. He emphasised that such claims strike at the very heart of the army’s dignity and professional standing. The military remains a cornerstone of the fight against terrorism across the Sahel and the broader Lake Chad basin, areas that have endured years of persistent extremist violence.
Adherence to international humanitarian standards
Government officials maintain that all military maneuvers are executed with extreme precision and in strict alignment with international humanitarian law. Every possible measure is implemented to mitigate collateral damage and ensure the safety of non-combatants while targeting Boko Haram positions.
This official response follows a report suggesting that aerial interventions by Chadian forces may have resulted in significant civilian losses. The document has reignited intense debate regarding the conduct of security operations in this volatile border zone, where skirmishes between armed groups and state forces are a frequent occurrence.
Calls for objective reporting and cooperation
Authorities in N’Djamena argue that the findings presented by the international body lack a solid evidentiary foundation. On the contrary, they assert that the defense and security forces are performing a vital role in regional stabilisation, acting as the primary shield against the spread of terrorist threats.
The administration is now calling for a more balanced and responsible interpretation of the security landscape. While reiterating a deep commitment to protecting the population, the government is also advocating for enhanced international coordination to more effectively combat the extremist factions operating within the Lake Chad basin.
Despite the current diplomatic friction, the leadership in Tchad has reaffirmed its resolve to press forward with operations against Boko Haram, defending the legitimacy and expertise of its military personnel in an increasingly complex security environment.
