Burundi reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity
The Republic of Burundi has once again voiced its strong and unwavering backing for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Western Sahara region. This position was clearly articulated during a high-level meeting in Rabat between Burundian Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, as part of an official working visit to the Kingdom.
Diplomatic alignment on the Sahara issue
Following the productive discussions, both nations issued a joint communiqué in which Bujumbura not only reaffirmed its support for Rabat’s autonomy plan but also hailed it as the only credible and realistic solution to resolve the decades-long regional dispute. The Burundian government further emphasized its endorsement of the United Nations-led efforts to advance negotiations based on this Moroccan initiative.
The endorsement comes at a pivotal moment as Morocco continues its robust diplomatic campaign to secure broader international recognition for its position. The joint statement specifically welcomed the adoption of the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 2797, which the Burundian delegation described as consolidating the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundation for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement.
Strengthening African solidarity on the Sahara question
This diplomatic gesture from Bujumbura reinforces a growing trend of African support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue. The meeting in Rabat serves as another testament to the strengthening ties between Morocco and its African partners, particularly in matters of mutual strategic interest.
