Burkina Faso severs diplomatic ties with France, citing “incessant activism” against its interests
A significant new phase has been reached in the Sahel crisis. The military regime of Burkina Faso announced on Friday, June 26, 2026, the official termination of its diplomatic relations with France. Accusing Paris of “incessant activism” detrimental to its national interests, the junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, solidifies a geopolitical separation that began with the 2022 coup d’état.
Following a period of increasingly strained relations, the military government of Burkina Faso announced on Friday its decision to formally sever diplomatic ties with France. The Sahel nation accused its former colonial power of “incessant activism” against its sovereign interests.
The relationship between Ouagadougou and Paris has significantly deteriorated since Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized power in a coup d’état in September 2022.
Since then, the military regime has pursued a staunchly sovereignist policy, characterized by repression against dissenting voices and a marked hostility towards Western nations, particularly France.
