Gabon’s political landscape has just witnessed a groundbreaking moment. In a tightly contested vote at an extraordinary Congress held in Libreville on June 25, 2026, Marie Joselle Itsana was elected as the new president of the Union du Peuple Gabonais (UPG). This landmark decision marks the first time in the party’s history that a woman has ascended to its leadership.
The election results reflected the intensity of internal debates, with Itsana securing 23 votes out of 43 cast, narrowly defeating her opponent Roger Mouloungui, who garnered 20 votes.
Uniting a divided party
While the Congress revealed deep-seated divisions, Itsana framed these differences as a testament to the party’s vitality. « Our Congress has showcased diverse perspectives and occasionally opposing views. This diversity is proof that our movement remains vibrant, » she stated, acknowledging the weight of her new responsibilities with both humility and resolve.
The newly elected leader emphasized the urgent need for unity, calling for an end to factional infighting that has historically weakened the party. Her message was clear: the time has come to close the chapter on internal conflicts and embark on a collective rebuilding effort.
Reviving the UPG’s political influence
Itsana’s primary objective is to restore the UPG to its former prominence on Gabon’s political stage. To achieve this, she has outlined a comprehensive strategy focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots presence nationwide. Her vision centers on core principles such as national sovereignty, social justice, transparency, and sustainable development.
Honoring the past, empowering the future
In her address, Itsana paid tribute to the party’s founding fathers, particularly the late Pierre Mamboundou, and the fallen activists who fought for democracy. « We must honor the legacy they left behind and remain accountable for the future we are building, » she declared.
Turning her attention to Gabon’s youth, she urged the younger generation to take an active role in shaping the party’s future, declaring that a new era for the UPG begins « here and now. »
