The Government of Burkina Faso has officially withdrawn its diplomatic presence in France, marking a definitive end to bilateral relations between the two nations. All twelve Burkinabè diplomats stationed in Paris have returned to Ouagadougou, where they were warmly received by Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

Upon their arrival, the diplomats handed over the national flag that previously adorned the embassy in Paris, along with the keys to the diplomatic property, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This gesture symbolizes the permanent closure of Burkina Faso’s embassy in France. Additionally, the Burkinabè authorities have refuted rumors suggesting that some diplomats sought political asylum in France.

This decisive action follows Burkina Faso’s announcement on June 26 to terminate all diplomatic ties with France. In line with the principle of reciprocity, French diplomatic personnel were expelled from Burkina Faso in early July, while Burkinabè officials were given a strict deadline to vacate French territory.

Ouagadougou justified this move by accusing France of pursuing a « persistently intrusive » policy against Burkina Faso’s national interests. Paris, in turn, labeled Burkina Faso’s decision as « unjustified and antagonistic, » expressing disappointment over the escalating tensions between the two countries.

This diplomatic rupture is part of a larger strategic realignment initiated in September 2022, following the rise of Captain Ibrahim Traoré to power. Since then, Burkina Faso has progressively distanced itself from its former colonial ally, culminating in the withdrawal of French military forces from its soil—a pivotal turning point in the nation’s foreign policy.

In the wake of this shift, Burkina Faso has actively forged new partnerships with countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Iran, prioritizing security collaboration, economic partnerships, and international diplomacy.

The closure of Burkina Faso’s embassy in Paris is a historic milestone in recent bilateral relations. It reflects the country’s bold pursuit of a new diplomatic direction and signals a transformative chapter in Burkina Faso-France relations, one that will attract global attention and scrutiny.
