The apprehension occurred early in the morning, around 8:30 a.m., during a routine inspection. Law enforcement personnel identified 23 travelers, all Nigerian nationals of Haoussa ethnicity, who were reportedly en route to Burkina Faso.

Upon being brought to the police station for further questioning, the migrants detailed their journey. They stated that they had departed from Tchaki, Nigeria, then proceeded on foot, spending the night in Boukouro, a Béninois village situated near the border. Their declared intention was to reach gold panning sites in Burkina Faso in pursuit of gold.

Despite initial checks confirming that all travelers possessed valid identification documents, police are delving deeper to uncover the circumstances surrounding this journey. Particular suspicion has fallen on their escort, a 20-year-old Béninois man from Bassila, residing in Parakou, who is believed to have orchestrated this clandestine movement.

All individuals taken into custody have since been transferred to the Tchaourou police station. An active investigation is underway to shed light on this incident and ascertain whether an organized migrant trafficking network is involved.
