Algeria’s Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, touched down in Niamey this week for a high-level official visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The trip, directed by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores a shared commitment to expanding strategic partnerships across multiple sectors.

The Algerian delegation includes key figures such as the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, alongside the Director-General of Algeria’s Agency for International Cooperation in Solidarity and Development.

Initial discussions between the Algerian and Nigerien heads of government centered on reviewing the state of bilateral relations and identifying new avenues for collaboration. The talks focused on accelerating joint development projects and strengthening existing partnerships between Algiers and Niamey.

A milestone in energy cooperation

One of the most anticipated highlights of the visit was the inauguration of a 40-megawatt power plant in Gorou Banda, Niamey. Funded and implemented as part of Algerian-Nigerien cooperation, this facility represents a significant contribution to Niger’s energy infrastructure, offering a strategic boost to the country’s electricity production capacity.

The new power plant is set to enhance energy supply in several key districts of the capital, demonstrating Algeria’s dedication to supporting sustainable development and regional stability in the Sahel-Saharan zone.

Future prospects and regional dialogue

Beyond infrastructure, the visit also includes a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Ghrieb and Niger’s President. This encounter is expected to explore long-term cooperation frameworks, as well as shared regional and international priorities.

The timing of this official visit reflects a broader trend of growing political and economic engagement between Algeria and Niger. Both countries are actively working to solidify their alliance, aligning their efforts to serve the mutual interests of their populations.
