Reacting to the ongoing constitutional revision debate during a press conference by the Diomaye Président coalition, Minister Abdourahmane Diouf asserted that no one would be able to sow instability in Senegal as long as Bassirou Diomaye Faye remains at the helm. He stated that the head of state had, since 2024, provided reassurances regarding the stability of institutions and social peace.
The minister also revisited the 2024 electoral sequence, claiming that Ousmane Sonko had initially favored a postponement of the presidential election before eventually backing Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s candidacy during the campaign. According to Diouf, the president of the National Assembly has since strayed from that stance, even accusing him of “betraying” the head of state and engaging in “political manipulation” concerning the institutional reforms under discussion.
Diouf further emphasized that previous presidents, despite also holding parliamentary majorities, had not used that leverage to amend the Constitution in the manner now proposed. In his view, if such changes had been made earlier, today’s political actors would not be able to advocate for the reforms they are now championing.
Abdourahmane Diouf was notably harsh toward National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko, reminding him that he had once styled himself as the ‘guardian of the revolution’ — a posture Diouf considers inconsistent with his current duties leading the assembly. “We have no need for a bogus guide,” Diouf retorted.
