2026 World Cup: New Zealand’s All Whites on the brink of making history despite disappointing setback

The All Whites’ head coach, Darren Bazeley, struck an optimistic tone after his side’s disappointing draw, insisting that a knockout spot in the 2026 World Cup is still within reach. “One more win could lock our place in the Round of 16,” he declared. “Now, we must beat Belgium to secure it.”

Bazeley acknowledged the tough task ahead but stressed that his team remains in control of their destiny. “Belgium is a strong side, no doubt, but if we can recapture the intensity we showed against Iran and Egypt, we have a real shot,” he explained. “We know exactly what we need to do—beat Belgium.”

Reflecting on the narrow loss to Egypt, the English manager admitted frustration. “We had every chance to win that game. It stings to come up short. We dominated possession in the first half, played with confidence, and looked comfortable. But we couldn’t maintain that rhythm in the second half. Egypt stepped up their game, and it cost us.”

“At halftime, we felt satisfied, but we didn’t take anything for granted,” he continued. “We struggled at times with set pieces and quick transitions, and that’s when Egypt struck. It’s heartbreaking to watch another team celebrate on the pitch. We led in two matches and had clear chances—we just need to finish them off. Anything can happen when the margin is a single goal.”
