Togo-Egypt partnership takes center stage at Seoul summit

The first Korea-Africa ministerial gathering, held in Seoul on June 1-2, provided a key opportunity for Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey to engage in high-level discussions with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty. The bilateral meeting underscored the shared commitment to deepen economic and diplomatic cooperation between Lomé and Cairo.

Key sectors identified for enhanced collaboration

During the talks, both ministers reviewed the current state of Togo-Egypt relations, highlighting the strong foundation already in place. The Egyptian delegation emphasized Cairo’s eagerness to expand partnerships with Togo across multiple strategic domains:

  • Infrastructure development – including roads, bridges, and urban projects
  • Energy sector – renewable and conventional energy initiatives
  • Agricultural modernization – irrigation systems and agro-industrial projects
  • Pharmaceutical industry – local production and technology transfer
  • Port infrastructure – expanding Lomé’s role as a regional logistics hub

Both sides agreed on the importance of accelerating joint ventures to support Togo’s development agenda while leveraging Egypt’s technical expertise.

Digital transformation and technological exchange

The discussions also highlighted the critical role of technology transfer in fostering Africa’s economic evolution. Minister Dussey and Abdelatty explored ways to enhance digital governance, strengthen cybersecurity frameworks, and deploy smart solutions in public administration. These efforts aim to align with Togo’s National Development Plan, which prioritizes digital innovation as a growth driver.

Regional security and diplomatic solidarity

Beyond economic matters, the ministers addressed security challenges affecting the continent. They examined the volatile situations in the Great Lakes region and the Sahel, reaffirming their support for African-led mediation initiatives. Egypt commended Togo’s proactive role in peacebuilding efforts, particularly in conflict zones across the continent, and pledged continued collaboration to promote stability and dialogue.

Strategic partnership for a shared future

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both countries’ dedication to strengthening South-South cooperation. In a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape, Togo and Egypt are positioning themselves as key partners in addressing shared challenges—from climate resilience to economic diversification and regional security.
