Bénin and Niger agree to remove all barriers to bilateral cooperation

Cotonou and Niamey demonstrated a shared commitment to revitalizing their partnership on Tuesday, June 2, during an official state visit to Niger by the President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni. The visit took place at the invitation of his counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani.

Following the high-level meeting, a joint statement emphasized the necessity of deepening cooperation across political, economic, scientific, and cultural sectors. Both leaders reached an agreement to increase bilateral exchanges, specifically by ensuring the regular assembly of the Niger-Bénin joint cooperation commission.

A primary objective of this diplomatic engagement is the elimination of all hurdles hindering regional synergy, with a specific emphasis on the full reopening of the Bénin-Niger border. This vital passage had been closed for a significant period due to diplomatic tensions, which had previously stalled trade and restricted the movement of people between the two West African nations.

To translate this political vision into practical results, the two heads of state have commissioned a dedicated team of experts. This committee is responsible for identifying existing obstacles and proposing actionable solutions, with a requirement to submit a comprehensive report within fifteen days.

The discussions between Wadagni and Tiani, which included their respective delegations, were conducted in a spirit of cordiality. The sessions allowed for an in-depth review of the challenges facing both countries, as well as broader regional and international security and political issues.

The presidents celebrated the long-standing ties of brotherhood and friendship that unite Niger and Bénin. They reaffirmed their mutual desire to elevate bilateral cooperation to a level that meets the security and development expectations of their respective populations.

President Wadagni, who was inaugurated on May 24, has placed the normalization of relations with neighboring countries at the forefront of his administration’s agenda. During his visit, he extended an official invitation to President Tiani to conduct a reciprocal visit to Bénin.
