Political tensions in Sénégal have intensified as debates swirl around the potential dissolution of the National Assembly. During a Pastef rally in Linguère this past Saturday, party leader Ousmane Sonko delivered a bold statement, directly challenging President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to consider the consequences of such a move.
Sonko framed the dissolution of the Assembly as a high-stakes gamble for the ruling power, predicting a decisive victory for his party in the event of snap legislative elections. His confidence was unmistakable as he outlined the scenario:
« If they hold local elections, we will defeat them. If they dissolve the Assembly, it will be even worse for them—and that’s exactly what we want. We will crush them. »
With a sharp tone, Sonko went further, suggesting that an electoral setback could politically weaken the president to the point of resignation before the 2029 term concludes.
« I even fear that he might throw in the towel before 2029. »
Call for calm and vigilance
Beyond the electoral battle, Sonko urged his supporters to remain composed and avoid falling into traps set by opponents. He warned that some factions might attempt to provoke Pastef supporters to justify legal actions against the party, including revoking its registration.
« I call on everyone to stay vigilant and calm, » Sonko stated. « They are looking for ways to provoke Pastef so that our youth react, giving them an excuse to dissolve the party and withdraw its certificate. »
Sonko emphasized that if his followers resist provocations and stay focused, the upcoming elections could unfold as a « walk in the park » for his party—a phrase that underscores both confidence and strategy.
