The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, expressed strong frustration during a cabinet meeting on Thursday regarding the sluggish pace of judicial proceedings linked to financial accountability.

Yassine Fall, the Minister of Justice, presented updates on ongoing cases, prompting Sonko to directly challenge the effectiveness of the judicial system in handling alleged mismanagement of public funds.

Demands for accountability and transparency

Sonko criticized the slow progress of legal procedures, highlighting the absence of tangible judicial decisions in several high-profile cases. He emphasized that public resources may have been misappropriated without visible legal consequences, undermining public trust in government institutions.

The Prime Minister stressed the need to assign responsibility across all levels—past and present administrative and political figures—and warned of persistent dysfunctions within the judicial chain, describing some bottlenecks as structural obstacles.

In response, Yassine Fall assured that her department is actively working to expedite ongoing trials. She acknowledged operational constraints but reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to pursuing accountability where evidence supports it.

Sonko maintained pressure, calling for stricter deadlines and greater transparency in case management. He reiterated that financial accountability remains a cornerstone of the current administration’s mandate, essential for restoring citizen confidence in state institutions.

During the meeting, Sonko underscored that judicial cases are a matter of public interest and must be handled with urgency and rigor to preserve institutional credibility.
