Just days after parliament adjourned for summer recess on June 30, deputies have been ordered back to Dakar for an emergency session. The meeting, called by National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko, is slated for Friday at 3 p.m., coinciding with the constitutional council’s decision to invalidate Law No. 18/2026, which aimed to revise the national constitution.
While Sonko initially acknowledged the council’s authority after the ruling, calling its decision “binding on all,” the sudden recall of legislators suggests deeper strategic considerations. The move has sparked speculation about the majority coalition’s intentions regarding constitutional amendments and potential legislative maneuvers to address the void left by the invalidated law.
