Constitutional court strikes down reform law
The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly acknowledged the constitutional court’s ruling invalidating the reform law passed by lawmakers.
In a clear statement, Sonko emphasized that the court’s decision is binding on all branches of government, closing the door on further debate. « Beyond any differing opinions on the reasoning behind this decision, one thing remains certain: this ruling must be respected by all. Case closed, » he declared in an official statement.
Institutional balance key to stability
Sonko framed the situation as proof that Senegal’s democracy functions best when each institution operates strictly within its constitutional mandate. « When institutions fulfill their roles as designed, no crisis can arise, » he noted, underscoring the importance of institutional respect.
Despite the setback, the National Assembly remains committed to its legislative duties. « We will continue to exercise our mandate without hesitation, » Sonko affirmed. « Laws will be debated, approved, or rejected in the best interests of the Senegalese people, who deserve nothing less than dignity and progress. »
