Senegal’s president sacks prime minister Ousmane Sonko
The political landscape of Senegal has shifted dramatically as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye removes Ousmane Sonko from the prime ministerial role. The decision marks a decisive break in the relationship between the two leaders.
Ousmane Sonko has been removed as Prime Minister and head of government in Senegal. The announcement was made on national television by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The decision brings to an end a period of growing tension between the two prominent figures in Senegalese politics. With Sonko’s dismissal, the entire cabinet—including ministers and state secretaries—has also been dissolved.
Sonko responded swiftly on social media, expressing relief. “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight I will sleep peacefully in Keur Gorgui,” he wrote.
The dismissal also triggers the dissolution of the entire government. The Presidency has confirmed that a new prime minister will be appointed, and a fresh government will be formed under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Sonko played a pivotal role in Faye’s rise to power in 2024. Unable to run himself, Sonko endorsed Faye as the candidate, campaigning vigorously alongside him. Faye’s victory in the presidential election was decisive, securing over 54% of the vote in a single round.
