Senegal’s President launches new party in political shift
Dakar — Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has formally established a new political party, marking a decisive break with his former ally and ex-Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The announcement, made during a gathering in Dakar, introduces Kiiraay, a movement rooted in Wolof culture where its name signifies “protection” or “shield.”
The newly formed party positions itself as a vehicle for Patriotic Republicans, emphasizing core national values such as republicanism, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and diligence. Faye declared his ambition to transform Kiiraay into the dominant political force in Senegal, a statement that coincides with a wave of defections from the ruling Pastef party to his new movement.
A definitive political separation
The launch of Kiiraay puts an end to months of escalating tensions between the President and Ousmane Sonko. Their alliance, which propelled both to power in 2024, has now fractured completely. Faye had initially appointed Sonko as Prime Minister upon taking office, but their collaboration collapsed in May 2026 following sharp disagreements over policy and governance. Despite his removal from the government, Sonko retains his position as Speaker of the National Assembly and continues to lead the Pastef party, which still commands a strong parliamentary majority.
Redefining Senegal’s political landscape
The emergence of Kiiraay signals a new phase in Senegal’s political trajectory. The party is slated to hold its inaugural congress following the rainy season, setting the stage for intensified rivalry between Faye and Sonko. This power struggle is poised to reshape the country’s political dynamics, with both figures positioning themselves as central players in the evolving national narrative.
Kiiraay’s foundational principles
- Republican values: Commitment to democratic governance and institutional integrity
- Ethical leadership: Emphasis on accountability and moral responsibility in public office
- Transparency: Open governance and anti-corruption measures as core objectives
- Fraternity: National unity and social cohesion as guiding principles
- Productive work: Economic development through collective effort and innovation
