The feared price hike has now taken effect. In an early-morning press release issued today, authorities confirmed that fuel prices have been adjusted upward starting immediately. Super gasoline now costs 990 West African CFA francs per liter—a 70 FCFA increase—while diesel now stands at 755 FCFA per liter, a 75 FCFA rise.

This decision aligns with the warnings issued by opposition leader Ousmane Sonko during a parliamentary session in May. He cautioned that external pressures, particularly from global oil market volatility, could force price adjustments despite government efforts to shield citizens from the impact.

Sonko stated at the time: “We are doing everything possible to prevent the Middle East crisis from burdening our people. But when circumstances make it unavoidable, we will have to return to the public and explain that maintaining lower prices is no longer sustainable.”

Authorities clarified that this adjustment merely returns prices to their pre-reduction levels set on December 6, 2025. Other petroleum products, including household gas and boat fuel, remain unchanged.

The move comes as global oil prices surge due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East—a factor the Senegalese government cannot ignore despite its commitment to minimizing public hardship.

While the increase is modest, it will ripple through the economy, affecting transportation and consumer goods costs. For Senegalese citizens already grappling with rising living expenses, this latest adjustment adds another layer of financial strain.
