The solemn ceremony unfolded under the watchful gaze of the Constitutional Court, seated on the stage in full ceremonial regalia. Moments later, the long-awaited oath-taking moment arrived: Romuald Wadagni stepped forward, clad in a dark suit and blue tie, his right hand raised high as he vowed to « uphold and defend the Constitution » and accept legal consequences for any breach of that oath.
The proclamation was met with a thunderous salute of twelve cannon blasts. Following tradition, the newly sworn-in leader was immediately invested as Grand Master of the National Orders, before the Chief of Staff presented him with the national flag, symbolizing his official assumption of office.
In his inaugural address, Wadagni pledged to serve Benin with unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication, ensuring the rule of law and safeguarding fundamental freedoms. He promised citizens inclusive economic growth, vowing that « every family will benefit from this progress. »
Addressing national security, he reaffirmed Benin’s steadfast stance against terrorism, declaring that the country would remain resolute in the face of any threats to its stability. Turning to regional diplomacy, he emphasized the need for deeper collaboration with neighboring nations, acknowledging the presence of sixteen international delegations, including ministers and leaders from France, Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger—with particular emphasis on the latter, given the current tensions in bilateral relations.
« We are bound by geography and shared destiny to work together, » Wadagni declared, underscoring his commitment to strengthening regional partnerships for mutual prosperity and security.
The ceremony concluded with the participation of former Béninese heads of state Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, who witnessed the historic transition.
