The first wave of Burkinabè pilgrims returned to Ouagadougou on June 2, 2026, after weeks of spiritual devotion in Islam’s holy sites. A total of 342 faithful disembarked at the international airport, greeted by jubilant families and dignitaries. This inaugural flight signaled the start of the repatriation phase for pilgrims who had completed the fifth pillar of Islam.

Clad in vibrant traditional attire, the pilgrims radiated joy, their faces beaming with gratitude for answering the spiritual call. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, visibly moved as she stepped off the plane.

« The experience in Mecca was beyond anything I imagined. As a first-timer, I’m overwhelmed with happiness. Everything went smoothly… We prayed fervently for the restoration of peace and social cohesion across Burkina Faso », she shared.

The government’s representative, Saïdou Sankara, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, expressed satisfaction with the pilgrimage’s smooth execution. While avoiding a full assessment, he confirmed no major incidents had occurred and conveyed the state’s appreciation for the safe return of the pilgrims.

« This is a moment of joy and gratitude as we welcome our brothers and sisters home in good health after fulfilling their sacred duty. On behalf of the Minister of State, we’ve come to honor them and wish them continued spiritual strength. May all prayers offered in Mecca be fulfilled—for their families and our nation », he affirmed.
