Paris gripped by unrest after PSG-Arsenal Champions League climax

Initial arrests occurred Saturday in Paris near the final of the Champions League, particularly around Porte de Saint-Cloud and the Champs-Élysées.

The atmosphere in Paris turned tense Saturday evening as the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal unfolded. According to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, a dozen arrests were made in the vicinity of the Parc des Princes, where the match was broadcast.

Clashes erupt on Champs-Élysées and near key landmarks

As tensions rose, the upper section of the Champs-Élysées was cordoned off. Many disappointed PSG supporters gathered at the lower end of the avenue, following the match on their phones. Soon after, altercations broke out between law enforcement and rioters, leading to arrests. A bus shelter was damaged, and projectiles were thrown toward police near the iconic avenue, where 4,000 to 5,000 fans had congregated.

In the 16th arrondissement, mortar fire was reported along Avenue Kléber. Meanwhile, in the 18th arrondissement, groups of masked individuals carrying iron bars were spotted moving through the streets, though no immediate acts of vandalism were reported.

During the second half of the match, our team on the ground observed crowd movements near Châtelet and around the Parc des Princes. In both locations, law enforcement deployed tear gas to disperse the gatherings.

10 held in custody by 7:30 PM

By 7:30 PM, police had conducted 1,579 checks, resulting in 64 fines. Twenty individuals were detained, with ten placed in custody, according to the Paris Police Prefecture (PP). Authorities also seized 24 torches and two mortars, and reported damage to a bus shelter on Avenue de la Boétie, close to the Champs-Élysées. Projectiles were thrown at officers in the area, where crowds swelled to between 4,000 and 5,000 people during the match.

Near the Parc des Princes, around 150 individuals attempted to force entry through a stadium gate. A swift police response successfully repelled the attempt, restoring order within minutes.
