After a temporary halt for the Grand Magal de Touba celebrations, Pastef’s leader, Ousmane Sonko, has reignited the robust membership campaign he initiated. The operation officially commenced in Touba, coinciding with the “48H Pastef” event. Since its launch, the tour has already engaged communities in Bargny, Sébikotane, Khombole, Bambey, Keur Madiabel, and Mbacké. Each stop has been marked by significant public turnout, mirroring the enthusiastic reception seen on July 26, the same day the presidential party Kiiraay was unveiled.
This renewed push is integral to Pastef’s ambitious target: enrolling one million new members before October. Ousmane Sonko himself underscored this objective during his visit to Mbacké, where he expressed confidence that the Mbacké department alone could contribute significantly, potentially generating a million members. Previous stages of the campaign frequently saw membership cards sell out within hours, necessitating urgent resupply efforts to meet the overwhelming demand.
The resumption of Sonko’s campaign unfolds amidst a charged political landscape. A notable development is the confirmed estrangement between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Furthermore, the recent launch of the new presidential party, Kiiraay, has led to the departure of several prominent Pastef figures in recent weeks. In response to these defections, the party leader recently urged his supporters to refrain from commenting on the exits and instead maintain unwavering focus on the ongoing campaign’s objectives.
