The Tchad has reached a pivotal moment in its energy evolution with the commissioning of a groundbreaking solar power plant in Adré, a bold step toward sustainable electricity access under the government’s renewable energy agenda.
Adré’s solar milestone transforms local energy landscape
The inauguration ceremony, held on August 7, 2026, at the heart of Adré—the administrative hub of the Ouaddaï region—was led by the local prefect, accompanied by senior officials from the Agence pour le Développement de l’Électrification Rurale et la Maîtrise de l’Énergie (ADERM), local leaders, technical partners, and residents. This project, aligned with national electrification goals, is designed to expand grid reliability, elevate living standards, and spur economic growth in Assoungha.
Community leaders and officials celebrate renewable energy breakthrough
Ahmat Abderrahim, Mayor of Adré, highlighted the project’s transformative potential, calling it a cornerstone initiative that underscores government support for the region’s energy infrastructure.
Younous Daoussa Mahamat, Director-General of ADERM, framed the inauguration as more than a formal event—it represents the fulfillment of a national commitment. He emphasized that this solar-hybrid plant, commissioned at the personal instruction of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, embodies the state’s pledge to ensure energy access as a universal right. “No citizen should be excluded from progress, no town left in darkness, and no youth’s future stifled by energy poverty,” he stated.
Technical specifications underscore project scale
The facility integrates 4,800 photovoltaic panels (585 watts each), delivering 2.8 megawatts-peak of power. It includes a 7.52 megawatt-hour battery storage system, dual 500 KVA backup generators, and an extensive 5-kilometer medium-voltage grid expansion alongside 10 kilometers of low-voltage distribution lines.
Local gratitude and national vision converge
Dillo Bergou, Prefect of Assoungha, conveyed the community’s deep appreciation to President Déby for prioritizing the region’s development. He praised the collaborative effort behind the plant’s successful completion.
The event culminated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tours of the facility, symbolizing a new chapter in Chad’s energy transition and the strategic role of renewables in national growth.
