During a political gathering in Khombole, Pastef party leader Ousmane Sonko publicly addressed a statement made by former minister Maimouna Dièye, calling for a correction in her use of religious language.
At the event launching the sale of party membership cards, Maimouna Dièye addressed the audience with a phrase that included a reverent reference to Sonko: « I am honored to be here, especially to speak in the presence of Seydina Ousmane Sonko Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam. » The inclusion of this religious formula immediately drew Sonko’s attention.
Sonko’s response: A clarification on religious respect
Taking the floor, Ousmane Sonko made it clear that such religious expressions are reserved exclusively for the Prophet Muhammad. « The affection people show me sometimes leads to misunderstandings, » he explained to the assembled supporters. « My sister Maimouna Dièye, when she spoke earlier, included my name with the phrase *Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam*. My name is not worthy of this honor. »
The leader of Pastef emphasized that this religious invocation should not be applied to any individual outside of the Prophet Muhammad. « Let us reserve this reverence for the Prophet Mohammad, » he stated firmly, as the crowd responded with applause.
Political mobilization continues across Senegal
This exchange occurred during a nationwide campaign by Pastef to promote party membership. Following the Khombole event, Ousmane Sonko is scheduled to visit several towns, including Bargny, Bambey, and Sébikhotane, as part of the initiative to expand the party’s grassroots support.
