On the sidelines of the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA), the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, held a high-level meeting this Thursday, June 4, with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, the head of the continental parliamentary body’s executive committee.

The discussions centered on the fundamental missions, organizational structure, and the potential for strengthening the UPA. These talks occurred against a backdrop of mounting challenges currently facing the African continent.

Proposals for institutional efficiency

During the audience, Ousmane Sonko put forward several recommendations intended to enhance the operational efficiency of the African Parliamentary Union. He specifically championed a comprehensive reform of its internal functioning to bolster its influence over the major political and institutional trajectories across Africa.

The leader of the National Assembly also highlighted the urgent need for greater synergy between the UPA‘s resolutions and the directives of the African Union. According to Sonko, establishing such a connection is vital to ensuring “greater coherence in the actions of African institutions.”
