The streets of Niamey were alive with celebration this past Saturday as thousands gathered to mark the third anniversary of Niger’s Refoundation, a pivotal moment that began on July 26, 2023, when military leaders assumed control.
«This historic day symbolizes Niger’s determination to close a dark chapter of its past, one marred by thirteen years of divisive governance and repression under the grip of foreign influence», declared Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a prominent figure in Niger’s civil society. The spontaneous outpouring of support underscores the public’s confidence in the new direction set by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP).
For many in attendance, the occasion was not just about reflecting on the past but also recognizing the strides made under this new political era. «The 26th of July stands as a day of liberation, a turning point toward a future where Niger charts its own course», shared Abdoulaye Salifou, a local resident among the crowd. «We’ve seen tangible progress, particularly in reclaiming our sovereignty from Western dominance. The authorities must remain steadfast in this mission», added Moussa Moumouni, another participant.
While the festivities highlighted achievements, the focus is also shifting toward the road ahead. The collective hope is that ongoing reforms will deepen, ensuring the Refoundation’s vision is fully realized.
