The Tchad government is set to take center stage on the continental water agenda, with N’Djamena slated to host the African Water Forum From Vision to Action on 15–16 July 2026.
Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Minister of State and Finance, and Farouk Mollah Banna, the World Bank’s Resident Representative in Tchad, addressed the media on 22 May to outline plans for the landmark event. Speaking with evident pride, the minister declared, « Hosting this forum on Chadian soil is a testament to our nation’s dedication to water security and sustainable development. »
The minister highlighted Tchad’s abundant water assets: the Lake Tchad basin, major rivers such as the Chari and Logone, plus additional lakes including Fitri, Léré, and Iro. He also emphasized Tchad’s role in shared transboundary systems like the Nubian Aquifer, underscoring the country’s strategic importance in regional water governance.
Yet, despite its vast resources, Tchad faces pressing challenges: erratic rainfall, rapid population growth, and aging water infrastructure. « These pressures demand bold, coordinated solutions, » the minister noted. « That is why Tchad is stepping forward as a leader in continental discussions on hydrological resilience. »
Farouk Mollah Banna confirmed that the World Bank is preparing a major funding initiative—currently valued at $160 million—to bolster water infrastructure nationwide. « This project will be submitted to the board two weeks prior to the forum, » he stated, signaling robust external support for Tchad’s water agenda.
The forum will convene policymakers, technical partners, financiers, and water experts from across Africa. Together, they will explore actionable strategies for improved water governance, equitable access, and climate-resilient infrastructure across the continent.
