Facing mounting financial pressures, Olympique de Marseille (OM) has been compelled to offload high-earning players to stabilize its balance sheet. Greenwood, whose hefty salary had become unsustainable, is now poised to join Fenerbahçe, a move that contrasts sharply with earlier expectations of a transfer to AS Roma.
Under the leadership of coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Roma had identified Greenwood as the ideal reinforcement for their attacking lineup. His unexpected pivot toward Fenerbahçe has drawn criticism, particularly in Italy, where pundits question the reliability of such negotiations.
Italian analysts slam the transfer’s unpredictability
Roberto Pruzzo, a prominent Italian football journalist, expressed his frustration over the outcome: “Greenwood’s case is a classic example of how these deals often collapse. There’s always doubt about whether the player genuinely wants to join a club, and in the end, they end up elsewhere. It rarely happens that a club signs a player on the spot because they genuinely like him.”
His colleague Fernando Orsi added: “Football won’t stop because of Greenwood’s transfer. Beyond his talent, concerns about his professionalism persist. He highlighted midfielder Moreira as a fitting profile for Gasperini’s tactical approach: “Moreira is a top-tier player whose style aligns perfectly with Roma’s philosophy. His market value has surged recently, boosted by his World Cup performances. The club could also consider options like Nusa, Garnacho, or Tresoldi, who delivered strong domestic campaigns.
