Two prominent figures from the former Groupe de concertation des acteurs politiques (GCAP) in Mali, Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, have been granted provisional release from custody due to severe health complications.
According to their legal representative, Me Adoum Moussa, the decision stems directly from the critical medical conditions affecting both individuals. « Their advanced age and multiple chronic illnesses necessitated this urgent measure, » he explained. Bamako‘s public prosecutor subsequently endorsed the temporary release, though it remains conditional and non-definitive.
Ongoing efforts for other detainees
Me Adoum Moussa confirmed that similar provisions are being pursued for other imprisoned members of the former GCAP who are also battling health challenges. « Legal steps are actively underway to secure provisional freedom for additional detainees whose conditions warrant compassionate release, » he stated.
Legal appeal against the conviction
The legal team representing the former GCAP leaders has filed an appeal against the eight-year prison sentences handed down in May. The case is now pending review by the N’Djamena appeals court, where the defense intends to challenge the verdict’s validity and severity.
This development follows the May conviction of GCAP leaders on charges including rebellion, criminal conspiracy, and illegal possession of military-grade firearms. The case has drawn significant attention within West Africa, particularly concerning the intersection of political dissent and judicial processes in the region.
