The Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group, JNIM, has released a propaganda video showcasing its April 25 assault on the Sévaré military camp and airport, located near Mopti in central Mali.
The strike on Sévaré was part of a coordinated series of attacks targeting several Malian cities, executed by JNIM jihadists alongside Tuareg separatists from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
According to Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute and a prominent analyst, this propaganda material clearly illustrates the significant strategic shifts within the JNIM.
“JNIM has demonstrated a profound capability to infiltrate urban environments and highly strategic locations such as the Sévaré airport and military camp,” Sambe emphasized. “This not only concerns the Malian army but also its Russian allies, raising serious questions about Mali security.”
The synchronized April attacks culminated in separatists retaking the city of Kidal and the assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, a town near Bamako, sending shockwaves through Mali politics.
The Malian government reported that these assaults also resulted in 16 injuries.
“What JNIM has managed to achieve is to gradually plunge Mali into a state of neither complete peace nor outright war,” Bakary Sambe elaborated. “Within this ambiguous environment, they are deploying an increasingly aggressive strategy.” He further highlighted the rise of figures such as Bina Diarra, a JNIM spokesperson, who aims to establish the group as a “legitimate political actor” in the complex landscape of West Africa Mali.
The release of this propaganda video coincides with Malian authorities announcing rewards for any information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders, underscoring the nation’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts to enhance Mali security.
