Government forces regain momentum in Mali’s fight against extremist factions
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a decisive shift in operations against armed groups in the country’s northern and central regions. In an official statement, military leadership confirmed that government troops have re-established control over areas previously targeted by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in the center and south.
Heavy clashes continue as reinforcements arrive
Fighting persisted on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location in northeastern Mali roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The engagement followed the arrival of additional personnel and equipment sent to bolster the MNLA’s position, according to military reports.
In response, Malian troops demonstrated heightened resolve, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with unwavering discipline and tactical precision. The army’s communiqué emphasized the resilience of its forces, stating: « We maintain absolute confidence in our ability to defend the nation’s sovereignty, safeguard civilian lives, and neutralize enemy threats. »
MNLA leadership denies leadership losses
The MNLA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously claimed control of Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. During a briefing, he categorically denied reports of the death of the group’s top commander, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the leader remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
