Diplomatic efforts continue in Lomé, underscoring Togo’s critical role in addressing crises across the African continent. On an official visit to the Togolese capital, Constant-Serge Bounda, the Republic of Congo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francophonie, and Congolese Abroad, was granted an audience on Thursday, July 9, 2026, by the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.

This significant high-level meeting is a continuation of the ongoing consultations between Lomé and Brazzaville. Discussions primarily centered on mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, alongside strategies to foster stability within Africa’s diverse sub-regions.

A pan-african alliance confronting security threats

Following the audience, the Congolese chief diplomat highlighted the strong understanding and shared perspectives between the two heads of state on major continental issues.

“Driven by their pan-Africanist vision, His Excellency Mr. Denis Sassou N’Guesso and his brother, His Excellency Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, regularly engage in consultations on matters of paramount importance to our continent, particularly those concerning peace and security. It was in this context that we were dispatched to Lomé to gather the insights of the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, on these crucial subjects,” Constant-Serge Bounda stated.

This diplomatic initiative reaffirms the joint commitment of both Togo and Congo to bolster African frameworks for dialogue and collaboration. For both capitals, this is considered an indispensable prerequisite for developing indigenous and effective responses to the numerous security and humanitarian challenges currently facing Africa.

Faure Gnassingbé’s sub-regional leadership reaffirmed

The selection of Lomé for these strategic consultations once again underscores Faure Gnassingbé’s acknowledged leadership and expertise in the realm of peace diplomacy.

It is important to recall that the Togolese President of the Council serves as the designated Mediator for the African Union (AU) in resolving the persistent crisis in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the broader Great Lakes region. This pivotal facilitator status firmly establishes Lomé as an essential hub for peace engineering efforts across Africa.
