A recent video, purportedly released by jihadist factions operating in the volatile “three borders” zone, claims to depict the June 17, 2026 assault on the military base at Inates, situated in Niger’s western Tillabéry region. The release of this footage has once again brought the precarious security situation in the area into sharp focus.
The visual evidence and accompanying statements within the publication suggest a meticulously orchestrated offensive. The attack reportedly commenced with a barrage of mortar fire targeting the military installations. Following this initial bombardment, the assailants claim to have encircled the base before launching a concerted ground assault utilizing automatic weapons and grenade launchers.
According to the video’s producers, Nigerien soldiers offered only limited resistance before attempting to withdraw. They further assert that multiple ambushes had been strategically positioned around the base, designed to thwart any retreat or the arrival of potential reinforcements for the beleaguered garrison.
However, the figures presented by the jihadist groups regarding casualties and material losses remain impossible to verify independently. The groups claim to have killed at least 80 Nigerien military personnel and destroyed seven armored vehicles, six pick-up trucks, and nine fuel tankers. Additionally, they state they seized twenty pick-up trucks, eighteen machine guns, a precision rifle, several grenade launchers, three mortars, and substantial quantities of ammunition.
As of now, neither Nigerien authorities nor any independent sources have corroborated these claims. In such conflict scenarios, armed organizations frequently employ their own visual media as a propaganda tool. This serves to demonstrate their operational capabilities, intimidate adversaries, and bolster recruitment efforts. Consequently, the figures they disseminate may often be exaggerated or incomplete.
Regardless of the unconfirmed specifics, this latest attack undeniably underscores the ongoing deterioration of security in the Tillabéry region. Nigerien forces continue to grapple with increasingly sophisticated offensives from armed groups. Despite strategic adjustments implemented over several years and enhanced military cooperation with new partners, these groups consistently exhibit their capacity to plan and execute complex assaults on fortified military positions.
The dissemination of this video carries significant strategic weight. Beyond merely documenting the ferocity of the combat, it aims to project the power of the jihadist groups, undermine the morale of security forces, and send a clear message to all actors engaged in the broader fight against insurgency across the Sahel.
