More Than 500 Dead in DRC’s Ebola Outbreak
The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has surpassed 500 deaths, according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health.
- As of today, there have been 1,561 confirmed cases, with 506 fatalities reported.
- 253 people have been declared cured, while 628 patients are currently being treated in isolation or hospitalization.
The outbreak was declared on May 15 and has since spread to 36 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, Nord-Kivu, and Sud-Kivu, where community transmission of the virus continues unabated.
Ituri remains the hardest-hit province, accounting for over 91% of all confirmed cases and more than 84% of total deaths since the outbreak began, according to Congolese authorities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus is evolving rapidly and spreading persistently. As of July 1, over 10,821 people who have come into contact with confirmed cases were being monitored in Ituri and Nord-Kivu as part of efforts to contain the outbreak.
