JNIM claims responsibility for deadly strike

The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, asserted control over a Malian military barracks in San, located in the Ségou region. Just weeks prior, on July 18, at least fifty soldiers were killed in northern Mali when a military convoy was ambushed by JNIM forces alongside Tuareg separatists from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). That attack stands as one of the deadliest against the armed forces since the conflict began.

Mali has faced persistent insecurity since 2012, driven by violence from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as communal criminal factions and Tuareg separatist movements.
