Trade unions and civil society groups gathered to unveil the « Appel de Dakar » (« Dakar Appeal »), a bold initiative aimed at revitalizing Senegal’s labor movement.
With unemployment rising and social dialogue steadily eroding, these organizations are pushing for a radical overhaul of the national union landscape. The founding document underscores the urgent need to shield labor activism from political, administrative, or partisan interference, emphasizing a return to core values: ethics, professionalism, and grassroots solidarity.
The appeal does not mince words when addressing the State and employers. It demands a transparent social dialogue and strict adherence to signed agreements, warning that lasting social peace cannot be forged through coercion or empty promises. Central to this vision is the rise of a new generation of union leaders, with a call for youth, women, and civic organizations to play an active role in shaping the movement’s future.
