Côte d’Ivoire celebrates women’s contributions to nation-building

An influential women-led organization has kicked off a landmark initiative to honor the pivotal role of women in Côte d’Ivoire’s development. The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) launched the first-ever National Week of Women Builders of the Nation on July 30 at Yopougon Town Hall, setting the stage for a four-day celebration leading up to the country’s 66th Independence Day.

The event, running from August 1 to 4, 2026, centers on the theme “66 Years of Independence: Women’s Achievements and Future Prospects in Côte d’Ivoire”. Its primary goal is to spotlight the indispensable contributions of Ivorian women to the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress while fostering discussions on persistent challenges and pathways for advancement.

Women’s achievements and future challenges

Rebecca Yao, President of FIP, emphasized the urgency of this introspective initiative. “This week provides an essential opportunity to assess the gains made by women since independence, pinpoint ongoing obstacles, and craft actionable recommendations to strengthen public policies.” She added that the event would serve as a platform to listen to women’s concerns and shape policies that better support their aspirations.

A packed agenda of reflection and recognition

The program includes a three-day national symposium at Yopougon Town Hall, featuring a keynote address and 16 thematic panels covering critical areas such as female leadership, healthcare, education, economic empowerment, youth development, and women’s rights. An exhibition will also showcase the stories of pioneering women and highlight successful entrepreneurship initiatives led by women across the country.

The symposium will culminate in the release of a white paper, which will be submitted to relevant authorities to ensure the recommendations are translated into action. The highlight of the week will be a gala dinner on August 4 at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 women pioneers will be honored for their contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960.

A lasting legacy for future generations

Rebecca Yao expressed her commitment to making this initiative an annual tradition. “This event is not just about celebrating past achievements; it’s about building a sustainable framework for progress. Each year, we will revisit the resolutions from the previous edition to measure advancements and refine our strategies.”

Mireille Bamba, Yopougon’s deputy, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the support of Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers envision this week as a recurring platform for dialogue, reflection, and recognition of women’s vital role in the nation’s ongoing development.
